In the video above I had to create sound effect sounds with 3 different mics and see which ones worked the best so that in the future for my radio programme I will use the mic that worked the best. The mics that I have used are sony voice recorder, phone recorder and boom mic. Each of them has their positives and negatives. To start off with the sony voice recorder, this is a recorder where you press the button and it starts recording. The recorder was good for one specific sound seen in the fire crackling sound. It didn’t have any bleed noises from outside. However one negative with the microphone is that it doesn’t pick up sounds from further away seen in the music classroom.
Secondly with the boom mic it was a good recorder for all sounds, capturing all the sounds. The boom mic is a mic that you connect onto the camera which stays. For example, for the last sound at the restaurant it was able to capture the sound from far away and still keep the volume equal to other sounds from the restaurant. Furthermore, the sound quality from the boom mic is extremely smooth and crisp compared to the other 3 mics and allowed me to capture realistic ambient sound. On the other hand, I didn’t notice any negatives of the boom mic except for the fact that the camera needs to be carried around alongside it. This makes it very uncomfortable to carry out for long periods of time as someone will need to be holding it in the air.
Lastly, the final mic that I used was my phone's built-in microphone to record the surroundings. The positive of the phone's microphone is that it was extremely easy to use as it’s quick and easy to access since I have it with me. I simply just had to take out my phone and go onto the camera app and click the record button. It had decent audio quality and was able to capture the necessary sounds that I wanted it to. However, on the other side the negatives of the phone's built-in microphone was that it wasn’t able to capture crisp audio of what I wanted it to. Even whilst going closer to the specific sound that I wanted to capture, it was struggling to pick up the sound.
Overall, the mic that I would use for my radio program would be the second mic which is the boom mic. The reason for this is because it performed the best out of the 3 other microphones that I had tested and it provides me with the necessary audio quality that I am after when finally shooting my radio programme. It will make the overall quality of the programme much better and allow for the audience to enjoy the film a lot more.
