LO2 P3 - Describe the multiplatform distribution methods + compare presentation of programmes unit 14

Difference between types of programmes

 Talk/music - Capital FM London

This Radio station contains different types of music which will give various of different people a choice to listen to them and discover new music. What is unique about them is the fact that they're a community radio station which is targeted for people who live in London. The main presenter having a London accent with adverts that are aimed for people who live around there. The presenter talks about the music stating that "get ready for Justin Bieber Sorry which is my favourite song" (then the song plays). This allows the music to relate to them or get interested in why this is their favourite song and listen to it. On capital FM London there is something out there for everyone.

Sport - talkSPORT

talkSPORT is a station which talks about sports. What makes them unique is that they talk about any sports, e.g. football, boxing etc. The presenters are from the UK, which majority of what talkSPORT talks about is sports from the UK. This means that the stations programmes is aimed at people that live in the UK. The type of programmes that are hosted on this radio station can be either a narrative of a sports (too let people know what is happening whilst they listen to the station or talk about it afterwards on what has happened. There is something out there for everyone with different sports to suit everyones interests.

Current events - BBC World Service - Global News Podcast

With the Radio Station BBC news, they keep people updated with current events. What makes them unique is that they talk about any news that's from around the world to keep people updated. BBC World Service is based in the UK however it's aimed globally for everyone. This would mean that people all around the world would listen to it since the global news podcast talks about any politics news, wars happening at different places of the world. This is great since it will inform many people about what is happening across the world whether is good or bad news.

Life - BBC Radio 4 - The Woman's Hour

On BBC Radio 4 there is an hour dedicated to woman which describes and has topics on what females go throughout life. What makes this programme unique is that it's very straight forward and informative on what happens with girls. It talks about different stories of females and with different ethnic backgrounds to show that it makes a change. This is great since females can relate to the programme and other genders can listen to the programme and get an understanding on what females go through on a day to day base. There is something out there on this programme for everyone, to learn, understand each female and much more.

To compare presentation of the programme

The two programmes I have chosen to Analysis is life BBC RADIO 4 - The woman's hour and BBC drama RADIO 4 - English Rose.

On BBC Radio 4 there is an hour dedicated to woman which describes and has topics on what females go throughout life and this programme is called The woman's hour. On BBC Radio 4 there is a drama called English Rose which talks about the life of a vampire which moves to America for work. The main difference of the presentation of both programmes is that the presenter on woman's hour is a host that talks to people however on English Rose since it's a drama. One of the characters (the main character) English Rose narrate the whole of the programme to the audience. Both programmes has an intro telling the audience what the programme is about and what's going to happen throughout the episode (give an insight).

The mode of address for English Rose is more informal since it's a drama and loads of people are talking. Especially the characters in the drama that are from America since they use American slang e.g. "Hot stuff". However the tone of the voice varies since there is many scenes that are serious and not serious. Whereas in Woman's hour it's quite formal since they talk about serious topics that happens in real life to females. They have a serious tone to their voice to be informative to one another. With English Rose the audience is able to question why the music is getting louder and building suspense however with The woman's hour that is unable to happen since it's more of a podcast talking about problems, news etc.

However since English Rose is a drama it includes much more sound effects to try and make the audience know what's happening since it's a radio programme. The woman's hour is a programme where people talk about their experiences about being a woman which doesn't include many sound effects due to it being about life and it doesn't have to be emphasised. The cast of English Rose is many voice actors who can take on the roles of the characters whereas on the woman's hour there is many presenters and new guests talking about their experiences on each episode. There is new cast on each new episode.

LO1 M1 - Analyse the structure and content of a programme broadcast by a chosen radio station (BBC Radio 4)

 English Rose - Limelight

Episode 1: The Call of the Wild

The programme I have chosen to analyse is “English Rose Limelight”. English Rose was first released on July 15th 2022 which comes on every Friday of the week. Each episode is 28 minutes long with an intro 2 minutes long. With the target audience it’s for people who are interested in gloomy dark fantasy genres to keep them entertained. This is because the main character Rose is a vampire and likes to drink blood from other people. You can access this programme on the BBC radio 4 on the Radio, TV or car. You are able to access this programme on BBC sounds, finding BBC Radio 4 and finding the English Rose programme by Limelight.

The programme dives straight into the plot. The story first starts off with the main character victims' deaths which then leads up to Rose the main character going to a different country. She arrives in the country and she is hungry but she tries to prevent her hunger from humans so they don’t find out who she really is. She struggles since her “mind wanders”. The whole programme's structure has an opening with music and a radio where it explains all of Rose’s killings saying “After an attack on a man in town” showing how bad of a person Rose is. Then after the intro is complete we dive into the story with Rose the main character talking to other characters about her going to become a nanny to a child from another country. Not only can we hear the characters talking with sound effects included, we can also hear Rose’s thoughts about the whole situation with the other characters. What she actually thinks of them. After every kill music comes on to give the audience tension. When the programme episode is coming to an end it has the same music from the intro as the outro with the radio that talks about all of Rose’s killings.

The purpose of this is to entertain the audience. The reason we can see this is since the genre is fantasy based which will entertain the people who like fantasy horror type of programmes. We can see the whole programme is based on vampires.  One example is we can see how everything is a mystery about Rose in this episode. We are able to see an unknown person is calling her and explaining to her that her moving out to become a nanny was the wrong idea for her. “Look at what you’ve done, all because you refuse to follow my rules there are crowds looking for us” (14:04) The unknown woman says on the phone. This is entertaining since it’ll bring the audience to the edge of their seats wanting to find out what Rose has done so bad in the past that made people figure out that she is a vampire. Another example is how the male audience sees a woman. “Hey nice ass… wanna join us for a drink?” (24:09)  a random man says. This shows us that Rose actually knows what male guys think of her and she won;’t fall off any of this which is quite entertaining. The audience will be entertained by Rose’s accuracy when it comes to people she meets predicting them straight away.

27:55

During the programme English Rose there are multiple ways sounds are used to emphasise a specific scene at a specific time. The first way this is shown is at 24:02 which the sound effect we can hear is heavy breathing. This creates the scene of the man breathing since he is scared because Rose is scaring him more dramatically. Since we are unable to see what is happening we have to rely on our ears and being able to hear and since this scene is dramatic we can get the sense of how scary it may have been for him. Another example is the intro has music that 00:46 - 02:29 which brings life to the whole of the programme. The piano starts then slowly other instruments are added making the whole dynamic of the music becoming more creeper since it’s building tension for the vampire Rose. This creates a good intro for the whole programme since it sets the bar and a good impression on how the rest of the episode will look. The music is also used for the background when there is talking in the programme to give more of an atmospheric effect and it won’t sound boring.

With the show English Rose the mode of address (how the programme influences us the audience) is the way that we are Rose’s thoughts. She is talking to us with her thoughts telling how she actually feels throughout the whole story about her. An example of this is at 04:58 “It seems as though I’m not a woman accurate in real life to her” says Rose telling the audience her thoughts and how she feels. Getting the audience a base idea on what's happening when diving into the plot. This gets the audience involved on what's happening since Rose is indirectly talking to us letting us know what is really happening. Rose’s thoughts influence the audience to be on her side since she is the main character.
